The SS Concentration and Labor Camps dataset was developed in 2008-2012 by Anne Kelly Knowles and a number of students at Middlebury College, including Alexander Yule, Benjamin Perry Blackshear, Charlie Hoffman, and Roz Vara. Our primary goal was to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics of the SS camps’ development and collapse from 1933 to 1945. The results of our initial analysis of these data were published as chapter 1, “Mapping the SS Camps,” in Geographies of the Holocaust (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2014).
As the metadata documents explain, the data posted here originated in a dataset of camp names, locations, and attributes developed by researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as part of the USHMM Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, vol. 1, Early Camps, Youth Camps, and Concentration Camps and Subcamps under the SS-Administration Main Office (WVHA) (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2009), edited by the late Geoffrey P. Megargee. We are grateful to Geoff and his colleagues at USHMM for inspiring and assisting us over the years. Any errors in the data are ours alone. If you find mistakes, please contact Anne Knowles.
